Therefore, i thought the word of the year announcement would be an excellent opportunity to introduce all of you to a new piece of vocabulary, as well as exploring some of the previous winners. Although the Oxford English Dictionary is not the only, or even the first, organization to run a word of the year competition, as a British person I feel attached to Oxford’s choices. At the end of November every year, Oxford University Press, which publishes the Oxford English Dictionary as well as a number of other dictionaries, announces an Oxford Dictionaries UK Word of the Year and an Oxford Dictionaries US Word of the Year (these are sometimes the same word). To be completely honest with all of you listening, I’ve actually been planning on making this episode for over a month.
